If Huawei is banned in India, which company will provide 5G in the country?
After recent tension on the Indo-China border, India's government has asked the state-owned telcos, BSNL and MTNL, not to use Chinese equipment for network upgrades. It is also considering a ban on the use of Chinese equipment by private-sector operators.
Reliance Jio, for instance has submitted applications for trials with Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung. Similarly, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have submitted with Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei and ZTE, while state-run BSNL/MTNL have submitted with ZTE and Nokia.
- Even before the China conflict, Jio was working with Nokia closely on replacing Huawei.
- In April, Airtel signed a ₹7,636 Crore (almost $1 Billion) deal with Nokia to lay the foundation of its 5G Network
Currently, Jio is the only Indian Telecom Network Provider that does not depend on Chinese technology, uses Samsung’s technology for 4G, while Airtel & Vodafone use Huawei’s technologies partly, while the State owned telcos BSNL & MTNL are mostly dependent on Chinese equipment and technology.
Asia's richest man has better ambitions on 5G Technology.
Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani at a meeting with US President Donald Trump recently said that Jio was the only network in the world that will not have any Chinese components in it while setting up 5G.
Reliance Jio instead acquired a US-based firm Radisys in 2018 for $67 million and has merged its subsidiary Rancore Technologies with itself to help in developing telecom equipment. This equipment will be either designed in India and built abroad or designed and built in India, as per its indications to TRAI.
Making its own equipment is just one part. It also needs deep pockets for 5G spectrum. The 5G spectrum band is between 3,300 MHz and 3,600 MHz
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended a base price of ₹492 Crore ($65.14M) per MHz. Stating that, an operator needs a minimum of ₹49,200 Crores to make host 5G.
Jio Platforms is currently flush with funds from several investors, including social media giant Facebook and private-equity firms including Vista and Silver Lake. In the last two months, it has received about $13 billion in total investment, of which $5.7 Billion from Facebook. Some of that could feasibly be used for the development of 5G products.
According to sources, the company has sought permission from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for lab testing a couple of weeks ago, as DoT has not taken a decision regarding 5G field trials. “We are looking at the Reliance Jio proposal and a call will be taken soon,” sources in DoT remarked.
5G networks were once expected to be launched in India by late 2020 or early 2021, but it’s now highly unlikely that this could happen before mid-2021. Covid-19 is also a major reason for this delay.
